Coupon Stacking

A technique of applying multiple coupons or discount codes simultaneously to maximize savings. Rules on whether stacking is allowed vary by service, so checking in advance is essential.

Basic Rules of Coupon Stacking

Coupon stacking is the practice of layering multiple discounts on a single purchase. For example, using a "store coupon for 10% off" together with a "manufacturer coupon for $5 off" yields a larger discount than using either alone. However, not all services permit stacking.

Combinations of different coupon types are generally the most stackable. Pairings like "discount coupon + free shipping coupon," "point rewards + discount code," or "first-time coupon + referral code" are often allowed because the discount mechanisms differ. On the other hand, stacking identical discount codes (e.g., two 10% off codes) is typically not permitted.

Stacking Rules Compared Across Major Services

Food delivery services have distinctly different stacking rules. Uber Eats allows combining a promo code with a delivery pass, but does not allow stacking multiple promo codes. Demae-can permits combining coupons with points, and in some cases even allows layering a free shipping campaign on top.

Among e-commerce sites, Amazon allows combining coupons with point rewards, and you can even stack a coupon on top of a time sale price. Rakuten Ichiba allows combining the Shopping Marathon point multiplier with store-specific coupons, and by entering multiple entry-based campaigns, you can significantly boost your effective cashback rate. However, note that Rakuten sets a point award cap for each campaign, so amounts exceeding the cap will not be returned.

Practical Methods to Maximize Savings Through Stacking

The first step to successful coupon stacking is accurately understanding the stacking rules of the service you are using. Many services have a "coupon stacking" section in their FAQ or help pages. If the rules are not clearly documented, contacting customer support directly is the most reliable approach.

A practical technique is to pay attention to the order in which discounts are applied. When combining a percentage discount (% off) with a fixed-amount discount (dollars off), the final discount amount changes depending on which is applied first. Generally, applying the percentage discount first yields a larger total discount, but since this depends on the service's calculation logic, it is safest to verify the actual discount amount on the checkout screen before confirming your order.

Pitfalls and Precautions of Coupon Stacking

Coupon stacking has several pitfalls. The most common mistake is attempting to apply incompatible coupons, which causes the previously entered coupon to be invalidated. Many services prioritize the most recently entered coupon and automatically remove the earlier discount. Always verify the total discount amount before completing checkout.

Minimum order requirements also demand attention. If Coupon A requires a $20 minimum and Coupon B requires a $30 minimum, stacking them requires an order of at least $30. Artificially inflating your order total just to increase the discount amount defeats the purpose of saving. When stacking coupons with different expiration dates, plan to use them before the shorter deadline expires. A coupon approaching expiration is better used on its own sooner rather than risking it going to waste.
