Travel Insurance

An insurance product that comprehensively covers risks arising during travel, including illness, injury, damage to personal belongings, liability, and trip cancellation. Broadly divided into overseas and domestic travel insurance, with significant differences in coverage and benefit amounts between credit card-bundled insurance and voluntarily purchased insurance products.

Coverage Items and the Importance of Travel Insurance for Overseas Trips

The five main coverage items of travel insurance are medical expenses, rescue costs, liability, personal belongings damage, and trip cancellation costs. Medical expense coverage is especially critical for overseas travel - in the United States, appendectomy surgery can cost 3 to 5 million yen, and fracture treatment can exceed 1 million yen. Japan's national health insurance overseas medical expense reimbursement system only covers amounts based on domestic medical fee standards, leaving the difference as out-of-pocket expense.

Rescue costs cover transportation and accommodation expenses for family members rushing to the traveler's side in case of hospitalization abroad. Liability coverage handles damages when you break hotel property or injure someone while skiing. Personal belongings coverage compensates for suitcase damage or camera theft. Arranging these coverages individually is impractical, making comprehensive travel insurance the rational choice.

How to Balance Credit Card-Bundled and Voluntary Travel Insurance

Credit card-bundled travel insurance comes in two types: "automatic" and "usage-based." Automatic coverage applies simply by holding the card, while usage-based coverage applies only when travel expenses are paid with that card. Since 2023, many card companies have switched from automatic to usage-based coverage, so you should always verify the coverage conditions before departure.

Card-bundled insurance typically covers 1 to 3 million yen in medical expenses, which may be insufficient for the high medical costs in the US or Europe. In some cases, coverage from multiple cards can be combined, though accidental death and disability benefits apply only from the card with the highest amount. After researching the medical cost levels at your destination, purchase voluntary overseas travel insurance if card-bundled coverage falls short. Buying online in advance is cheaper than purchasing at the airport insurance counter.
