What Are Student Discounts - And Why Do Companies Offer Them?
Student discounts (gakuwari) let you pay less simply by showing your student ID. They are accepted at a surprisingly wide range of places - movie theaters, museums, public transit, and subscription services, to name a few.
Companies offer student discounts for two reasons. First, students have limited income, so they are unlikely to pay full price. Selling a discounted seat is still better than leaving it empty. A movie theater seat that goes unsold during a screening generates zero revenue. Even with a 300-yen discount, filling that seat brings in 1,200 yen.
Second, if students get comfortable using a service while they are in school, they are more likely to keep paying full price after they start working. This is the concept of customer lifetime value (LTV) - student discounts are an investment in cultivating future loyal customers. Search "リュック" on Amazon
Transit Discounts - Commuter Passes at Less Than Half the Adult Price
Transit discounts deliver the biggest savings of any student discount category. JR student commuter passes cost roughly 60-70% less than regular commuter passes. For a route with a one-way fare of 500 yen, a monthly commuter pass runs about 15,000 yen, while the student version is around 5,000 yen. That adds up to a 120,000-yen difference over a year.
JR also offers a student fare for long-distance tickets. For journeys of 101 km or more, the base fare is reduced by 20%. All you need is a "gakuwari-sho" (student discount certificate) issued by your school, which you present at the ticket counter. Make sure to use it whenever you travel long distances for trips home or vacations.
Buses and private railways have their own student discount programs too. Beyond the routes you use for commuting, check each operator's website to see if discounts are available for weekend outings as well.
Subscription Discounts - Some Services Drop to Half Price
Many music and video streaming services offer dedicated student plans.
Music streaming: Spotify's student plan is 480 yen per month (normally 980 yen). Apple Music's student plan is 580 yen per month (normally 1,080 yen). Both come in at roughly half the standard price.
Video streaming: Amazon Prime Student costs 2,950 yen per year (normally 5,900 yen) and includes every Prime benefit - Prime Video, Prime Music, and free express shipping. That means all the perks covered in our Amazon Prime article are available at half the cost.
Software: Adobe Creative Cloud's student plan is 1,980 yen per month (normally 6,480 yen), a discount of about 70%. Microsoft 365 Education is free if you have a school email address.
Most student plans only require uploading a photo of your student ID or verifying through a school email address (.ac.jp). Just be careful not to fall into subscription fatigue - stick to the services you actually use.
A Checklist for Getting the Most Out of Student Discounts
Student discounts are a time-limited perk that expires the moment you graduate. That is exactly why you should take full advantage while you are still enrolled.
Movie theaters: General admission 1,900 yen drops to 1,500 yen with a student ID (saving 400 yen). Stack that with First Day discounts on the 1st of each month or late-show pricing, and you can get in for under 1,200 yen. As we explained in the economics of cinema popcorn, understanding how movie theaters make money helps you enjoy them for less.
Museums and galleries: Many institutions offer free admission for junior high students and younger, and half-price tickets for high school and university students. National museums often have free entry to their permanent collections.
Phone plans: Major carriers run student discount campaigns every year from December through May. These typically knock 1,000-2,000 yen off your monthly bill for 6 to 12 months.
Restaurants: Student coupons from beef-bowl chains and family restaurants are often distributed through their official apps. Some places even offer a free size upgrade just for showing your student ID.
Checking whether a student discount is available takes nothing more than asking at the register or looking at the pricing page. You might feel awkward asking, but the difference can add up to tens of thousands of yen over a year. Not asking is the real loss.
