Marketplace

An online platform where multiple sellers and buyers gather to trade goods and services. The operator itself holds no inventory, instead providing the trading venue along with payment and logistics infrastructure, earning revenue through commissions.

Marketplace Structure and Major Platforms

Marketplaces are broadly divided into three types: B2C, C2C, and B2B. B2C marketplaces, such as Amazon Marketplace and Rakuten Ichiba, are platforms where businesses sell to consumers. C2C marketplaces, such as Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions, facilitate transactions between individuals, primarily for secondhand goods and handmade items. B2B marketplaces, such as Alibaba and Monotaro, mediate business-to-business transactions for raw materials and commercial supplies.

Marketplace operators generate revenue through a combination of listing fees, sales commissions (a percentage of each transaction), advertising revenue, and monthly subscription fees for premium sellers. In Amazon's case, professional sellers pay a monthly registration fee of 4,900 yen plus category-specific sales commissions of 8-15%. Without understanding this fee structure when setting prices, there is a risk of profit margins falling below expectations.

Practical Decision Criteria for Using Marketplaces

When using a marketplace as a seller, it is crucial to weigh the platform's customer traffic against its commission structure. Amazon offers overwhelming traffic but charges high commissions and features intense price competition. Rakuten Ichiba benefits from its points ecosystem but requires fixed listing and monthly fees. Mercari allows easy listing even for individuals but involves shipping logistics and communication costs with buyers.

As a buyer, the basic strategy is to use the marketplace's comparison features to find the lowest price. However, beyond price alone, you should also check seller ratings, shipping speed, and return policies. Authorized products and parallel imports sometimes coexist on marketplaces, and for electronics and branded goods in particular, seller credibility must be carefully evaluated. It is also wise to familiarize yourself in advance with the conditions for buyer protection programs (such as Amazon's A-to-z Guarantee).
