The geographic range within which a food delivery service can operate. It is configured per platform and per restaurant, and the stores and menus available to a customer depend on whether their location falls within the coverage area.
What Determines Delivery Areas and How They Expand
Delivery areas are determined by a two-layer structure: the platform's overall service area and each individual restaurant's delivery range. Platform service areas are expanded incrementally starting from urban centers - as of 2024, Uber Eats operates across all 47 prefectures in Japan. However, coverage can vary between city centers and suburban areas within the same prefecture.
Individual restaurant delivery ranges are typically set at 1-5 km. This range is determined by considering food quality preservation (keeping hot food from getting cold), target delivery time (within 30 minutes), and delivery cost viability. During peak hours, delivery areas may temporarily shrink due to a shortage of available delivery partners.
What to Do Outside the Delivery Area and Future Outlook
Even if your home is outside the delivery area, there are several workarounds. First, check multiple delivery apps - a location outside Uber Eats' coverage may still be served by Demaecan or Wolt. You can also specify a delivery address within the coverage area, such as your workplace or a location you are visiting.
Delivery areas are continuously expanding. Platforms make expansion decisions based on a comprehensive assessment of registered delivery partner numbers, order demand density, and the number of partner restaurants. If your area is not yet covered, some platforms allow you to submit an area expansion request through their official website. Expansion into regional cities and suburban areas is expected to accelerate going forward.
