Service Fee

A fee charged to customers by food delivery platforms for order processing and system operations. It is billed separately from the delivery fee and is typically calculated as a fixed percentage of the order amount, usually around 10%.

How Service Fees Work and How They Differ from Delivery Fees

The service fee is collected from customers to cover platform operating costs such as app development and maintenance, customer support, payment processing, and insurance. While the delivery fee covers the cost of "getting the food to you," the service fee covers the cost of "processing the order."

Uber Eats adds a service fee of 10% of the order amount. Demaecan may not list a separate "service fee" but instead incorporates it into menu prices or delivery fees. Since the naming and calculation methods vary by platform, it is wise to always check the price breakdown on the order confirmation screen.

Understanding Total Cost Including Service Fees

To accurately grasp the true cost of food delivery, you need to evaluate the total: "item price + delivery fee + service fee - coupon discount." If the menu price is higher than the in-store price, that markup is also effectively part of your cost.

For example, if an item priced at 1,000 yen in-store is listed at 1,200 yen on the app, with a 150-yen delivery fee and a 120-yen service fee, the actual cost comes to 1,470 yen - roughly 1.5 times the in-store price. Whether this "delivery premium" is acceptable depends on individual circumstances such as travel time, transportation costs, weather, and physical condition. The smart approach is to weigh cost against convenience and use delivery selectively.
